Buddhist Study Groups in 2008


These study groups provide a theoretical introduction to Buddhism.

Each day, there will be presentations on the subjects indicated below and after a break, discussions based around those presentations follow. Non-Buddhists are encouraged to attend. This is an opportunity to learn from each other and share our knowledge and experience.

The courses will be conducted by Acharn Helen Jandamit, Acharn Kampan Suwanajak and invited speakers.

Dates and times

Two consecutive days from 10.00 to 16.00
Groups of two to six persons. Booking esential.
Snacks and course materials provided.

Suggested donation 4,500 baht per person for group participation.

Note: It is necessary to have completed level one before doing level two and so on.

The Dhamma - the texts and the truth within the texts

Session two,
The Triple Gem B
The Sangha - the Ariya Sangha, the ordained Sangha, the four pillars of Buddhism, monks, nuns, laymen, laywomen, priests

Session three,
Overview of the development of the vehicles of Buddhism, A
Theravada

Session four,
Overview of the development of the vehicles of Buddhism, B
Mahayana and Vajrayana

Level Two:

Session one.
The role of monks, nuns, laymen and laywomen in Buddhism A
Laypeople and the precepts and the ordained Sangha and the Vinaya
Session two,

The role of monks, nuns, laymen and laywomen in Buddhism B
Thai Mae Jis and ten-precept nuns

Session three,
Lay life and new developments (esp. in the West)
Session four,
Bodhisatva ordination
Lay and ordained meditation teachers


Level Three:

Session one.
The three marks of existence
Dukkha- suffering, unsatisfactoriness
Anicca - transitoriness, changeableness
Anatta - insubstantiality, uncontrolability, non-self

Session two,
Bhavana - Mental culture
Samatha and Vipassana meditation compared
Anapansati. The four Jhanas

Session three,
Meditation centres in Thailand
Some famous meditation teachers

Session four,
The four foundations of mindfulness
The Mahasatipatthana Sutta
Concepts of enlightenment, language and absolute truth
